8/17/2016 – We are nearing the end!  The turf has been completed and kids are now practicing on it.  The school year is ready to begin and first contests will be played starting September 1st with JV football hosting Sandy at 5:30.  Varsity will open Friday, Sept. 9th at 7:00 pm.  Plans are in the works for a community “Open Field” viewing and ribbon cutting ceremony as the Silver Fox Foundation gifts this beautiful field to the Silver Falls School District.  A couple of recent donations have really helped the project as Daniel and Jennifer Cote of Cote Chiropractic donated funds to purchase new soccer goals, and April Linn made a donation in the name of Silverton Boys Soccer towards purchasing the soccer corner flags.  We can’t thank these folks enough as well as everyone that so generously donated to make this dream a reality.  The Fox Foundation wants to make everyone aware that they will continue to fundraise towards “Phase Two” of this project which will be to install a new track surface next summer.  Please stay tuned for additional information or visit the Fox Foundation website to make your donation.

July 21, 2016 – More and more green is starting to show up as the field is being installed. The Field Turf Installation crew arrived with rolls of turf and supplies earlier this week and went right to work. They will work for about two weeks starting in the north end zone and working their way to the other end. After laying the turf, setting lines, and end zone lettering, the final advertising logos will then be installed. The last step will be the infill and brooming process. Once completed, the turf portion will be ready for kids to get on it for camp and practice activities. Other construction jobs occurring at the same time will be paving by George Ferge and his crew at H & H Paving. They will be working in the “D-Zone” areas and preparing them for Beynon to begin laying the track surface materials for the new high jump, long jump, and pole vault areas. It’s been exciting to see all of the work completed to this point, but there is still much anticipation as many final projects near completion.

June 20th, 2016 – In two short weeks the base of the field is approximately 80% complete.  K & E will be tying the drainage system together and completing the last portion of the surface drainage in a couple days.  Troy Eberle and his father Bob brought their crew in last week to form and pour the straight stretch curbs.  Materials for forms and pressure treated nailer boards were all donated by Withers Lumber with a special thank you to Ryan Brock.  This concrete curbing, when completed, will serve as an outside border for the turf field.  This week, the remaining portion of the gravel will be delivered and K & E will rough grade the surface.  To this point, almost 20 individuals or businesses have donated a combination of labor and materials towards the project.  It’s a long list, but we want to say thank to some folks who may have been missed to this date.  Trucking was a huge factor in getting dirt out and gravel in.  Thank you to those drivers and companies who made it happen so quickly.  They are Tim Shurter (Shurter Trucking), Bill and Marie Wolford (Abiqua Landscaping), Bob Qualey (Silverton Sand and Gravel), Jesse Rue, Tim Hansen (Hansen Utilities), Derek Hansen (D & I Excavating), Ivan Schmidgal, M & N Contracting, Ray Erlenbush, Bret Schmidt, Fred Zurbrugg (Z Excavating), River Bend, and Windsor Rock.  One step that was not discussed previously was the concrete sawing done by Kim Ashland and his crew from Ashland Brothers Concrete Sawing of Salem.  Kim’s crew cut a perfect line around the inside surface of the track down to a 4” depth.  Everyone has done a tremendous job and we are operating on schedule.  Excitement is building as we look for the Field Turf trucks to arrive after the 4th of July to begin laying turf.

We still need help!!!  Small projects needing to be completed are beginning to add up.  We have had specific donations that we are thankful for which include a new 30’ flag pole and flags purchased by the Silverton Elks Lodge and new aluminum team benches purchased by Bob Knodel of Silver Creek Auto Body.  We are seeking donors to sponsor the following items or projects to complete the McGinnis Field Remodel. Projects are:  Pole Vault Standards ($2000), New Shot Put Location ($5000), Audio Equipment for Stadium PA, Construction of two new Ticket Booths, and Soccer Goals/Corner Flags ($5000).   If you can help or know someone who can, please contact the Silverton High School Athletic Office by email at kaatz_greg@silverfalls.k12.or.us

June 9th, 2016 – 6000 yards of dirt and 500 dump truck loads later, the excavation phase of the project has been completed.  The incredible point to the casual observer is that K & E Excavation did it in about 3 days!  They had a number of dump trucks running for them, so check out our slide show and view all of the companies that chipped in.  This morning, the drainage portion and rock delivery is already underway.  And if you are curious how much water the new field will shed, the testing results show that the drainage system can handle 33 inches of water per hour.  Again, we can’t thank everyone involved in this project enough.  Check out the slide show on this page and look for another update in about a week.

June 6th, 2016 – It’s a great day for the Silverton community as well as the students in the Silver Falls School District!  The Fox Foundation-led project to install an artificial turf surface at McGinnis Field begins day one of construction.  Kerry and Darrell Kuenzi of K & E Excavating arrived with brand new equipment this morning and started the excavating phase.  Bill McNutt, project manager, and Rick Schmidt, president of the Silver Fox Foundation, were both in attendance as well.  Bill has brought vital experience to this project learned from similar privately funded turf field campaigns in the Salem-Keizer area.  Rick has been a tremendous community leader along with the rest of the committee on this project.  A special thank you goes to all of the community members serving on the committee.

In addition to Rick Schmidt and Bill McNutt, members are Tara Kramer – fundraising chairperson, Chuck White, Dean Oster, Kyle Palmer, Jim Hobbs, Curtis Stultz, and David Zagorodney.
