  • Please try to excuse an absence ahead of time or on the same day. You can call, e-mail, or send a note. Please include the following:

    • Your name (first and last)
    • Student’s name (first and last)
    • Reason for absence
    • Number to call you back if there is a question
    • A signature, if sending a note

If you call and receive the voicemail, please leave a message. Phone messages are checked at least every 15 minutes.

    • Parents may call, e-mail, or send a note with the time and reason the student needs to leave school. As much notice as possible is appreciated!
    • A town pass will be sent to the student in class. Their teacher will release them from class at the requested time. Students can leave the building with the town pass, eliminating the need for you to come inside to get them.
    • If your student knows they are to be excused for an appointment but did not receive a town pass, they must come to check out at the Attendance Office before leaving campus.
    • Students returning to school after leaving with a town pass must check in at the Attendance Office upon return.
    • Leaving school without properly checking out will result in one day of in-school suspension.
    • Any student late for school must check in at the Attendance Office before going to class.
    • A tardy of more than 30 minutes is considered an absence.
  • The day after an unexcused absence, an absence notice will be sent to your student in class. Your student will have up to 24 hours to excuse this absence excused by going to the Attendance Office with a parent note, or the parent may e-mail or call. If the absence is not excused within this time frame, the student will be assigned two lunch detentions for each unexcused class period.

    • The 9th period is if your student has a Zero period. You might hear this if you get automatic messages advising you of an absence.
    • The 10th period is Homeroom. You might hear this if you get automatic messages advising you of an absence.
    • Students are expected to be at school if they are going to participate in extracurricular activities, including athletics. If a dance falls on a Saturday, your student needs to be present for the entire prior school day.
    • The full text of these policies may be found in the Silverton High School Student Handbook.

When Should My Student Stay Home?

From the SFSD Nursing Staff

We want to remind you of ways you can help us maintain a consistent and healthy learning environment for our school community:

    • The most important thing you can do is to keep your student home from school if they are sick. Please refer to the attached chart for symptom-specific guidance. If they are sick, we recommend you consult their medical provider to seek treatment, if needed.
    • Wash hands using soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds OR sanitizer if soap/water isn’t available.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
    • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue (or sleeve) and then throw the tissue in the trash.
    • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces and shared items at least once a day.
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Eat healthy foods, exercise often, get outside time, get adequate sleep, and stay current on vaccinations.
    • If your student tests positive:
      • They should stay home until 24 hours after fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medications and other COVID-19 symptoms are improving. They are recommended to mask when they are around other people for 10 days since symptoms started.
    • If your student has been exposed to COVID-19:
      • Watch for symptoms for ten days after their last exposure. They are recommended to test after day 5 since exposure.
    • We have COVID-19 testing available for you.
      • At-home COVID-19 tests: Please ask your school for home tests if you need them for your student.
      • BinaxNOW diagnostic COVID-19 tests: If you are picking your student up from school because they are sick, we can test them before they leave! You will need to sign a consent when you pick them up (before testing). We will never test your minor student without your consent.
    • Please notify the school if your student requires medication during school hours.
      • Follow school protocols for medication at school.
      • If your student’s illness requires antibiotics, the student must be on antibiotics for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
    • Please notify the school if your student has an UNDERLYING OR CHRONIC HEALTH CONDITION.
    • We will work with you to address the health condition so students can learn, likely building a health protocol for them.
